All or Nothing…or Something
Sometimes, whether it’s a work project, or a personal task, something is all we can manage.
I didn’t eat much of anything this morning.
Probably not a big deal for a lot of people, but my body is pretty sensitive to blood sugar levels, and I’m training for the 2012 triathlon season. I need to keep my body fueled.
It came time to get my workout in, and at this point, not only had I missed having a real breakfast, but I also hadn’t eaten lunch. I’m at a convention in New Orleans, so I’m also walking a good deal. Energy was low.
I decided to do a 90 minute cardio session on the stationary bike so as not to go catabolic without any carbs in my system. About 15 minutes in, I started cramping, badly. I finished 30 minutes on the bike and decided to move to the treadmill for a run. Hopefully the different exercise would relieve the cramping.
Not even a mile in, my body was wanting to shut down from lack of energy, but there was no way I was going to quit my workout; I had to make it worth my while. So, after each mile, I’d take a walking break for a bit, and then I’d run again for the next mile, until I was finished.
I’m suppose to be an endurance athlete, or at least training as one, so from that perspective, the workout was awful.
But I got it done. And that’s the point.
I’m nothing if not an all or nothing person. I could have checked out of the workout under the guise of lack of nutrition, not feeling well, not wanting to hurt myself, or simply not being able to get in as intense a workout as I’d like.
But it was something.
And sometimes, whether it’s a work project, or a personal task, something is all we can manage.
And that’s ok.
